Long recovery...
Retired army helicopter pilot, Trapper, understands a fantastic plan sometimes catches a glitch. So was it this freezing cold day. He and I braved a half-mile stalk across the prairie in -31 degree wind chill to fulfill Trappers dream of hunting American bison on big county-the way we do it at JRGS! He got it done!
Meanwhile, his free plus-one, Roger and my right hand man Forrest waited for our call from behind a far hill, out of sight of the grazing beasts. In this type of cold, it is smart to have somebody in the pickup, ready to swoop in to extract us out of the weather, just in case...it's not that Roger and Forrest are sissies!!!!!!!!!!!
Trapper and I carefully slunk within 90 yards. Thirty mph wind at -5 degrees F made the opening shots difficult. Yet Trapper got some good ones in with his 338 Win Mag as the herd of bachelor bulls stampeded away. Somewhere between 3-4 miles later, the event crowned. One awesome TROPHY BULL bison lay dead on the prairie only a short distance of two ancient rock teepee rings resting on the prairie, a remnant of the area's first hunters. This hunt will never be forgotten, just ask Trapper.
This buffalo herd we were hunting is the oldest closed bison herd in the world. They've been out here surviving winter days like this and sweltering hot summer days since 1908. Jim River Guide Service does bison hunting best!
"This is exactly what I needed and what I was hoping for. You guys did great. You’re a real professional. Your logistics are tight. Everybody you have on your team is fantastic. After we got the bull killed, the whole thing ran like a well oiled machine. I couldn’t be more happy!" Trapper, NE

The ULTIMATE FAMILY HUNTING...big bad bison at JRGS
Look at the head on that thing!!!
I've said it many times, "Father-son hunts are AWESOME, no matter how old the participants." I've also always said that it's fantastic to have women in camp. We got both on this hunting trip.
Dan brought his mom and dad as non-hunters. AND, they got to watch us stalk and shoot this gorgeously huge SUPER TROPHY BULL from a far away hilltop through binoculars. Dave and I froze our sacks off with -20 degree windchill temps, but they watched from a heated pickup and saw the whole thing go down...warm and snug only a mile away! Having his sweet mother Becky in the mix was a spectacular addition to the hunting trip!
Great job of shooting Dan! You have a genuine monster to put on your wall.
